Pearce powers into the New Year

This Christmas and New Year, Pearce Hire provided the power required for Birmingham’s festive celebrations.

The city’s Centenary Square was the focal point of the Christmas excitement, hosting two events for the winter season. Diawali celebrations brought crowds to the square on Saturday 15th November followed on the Sunday 16th November by the Christmas light switch on. Birmingham based radio station, BRMB hosted the event, with performances from Rachel Stevens, Jamelia and The Blazin’ Squad on stage and local favourite Jasper Carrott performed the official lights switch on.

Event production professionals Pearce Hire were contracted by Birmingham City Council to manage the temporary power requirements of the event, supplying generators, distro and cabling for the occasion. This year’s event required additional power due to a modified event site from previous years, when the stage had been set up at the opposite end of the square. These changes to the site were a result of Birmingham’s recently built Ferris wheel and meant power had to be fed to the event site using an alternative method. Pearce Hire supplied two 200KvA generators across the weekend and added a further two 45KvA to the set up which were required to power the screens for Sunday’s show.

Two screens were positioned in the square at separate locations projecting live feeds from the stage show to the audience, with time delays incorporated in the pa system set up around the square, allowing the music to be heard clear by all. An additional feature to the square for the weekend was a truss sculpture, lit by LSD, which Pearce Hire also supplied power for, by running 200m of cable from the generator to the unique statue.

An open-air concert at Millennium Point brought in the New Year in Birmingham, with performances from Jamelia, ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again and local bands. For the 3rd consecutive year, Pearce Hire supplied the power for the free New Year celebrations using a 450 KvA twin pack. Similarly to the Christmas events, LSD supplied the lighting, SSE supplied the PA system and the screens either side of the stage were brought in by ADI, a combination of supplier that gave the people of Birmingham a Christmas and New Year to remember.

Birmingham City Council Production Manager, John Adkins commented: “Once again Pearce Hire delivered all the power and distribution requirements to the highest possible standard despite the driving rain and gale force winds. What impresses me most about Pearce Hire is that I can always rely on them to provide a safe and elegant solution.”
