GLASTONBURY 2003 - THE SUPER FENCE RETURNS!

After the success of the Glastonbury Festival in 2002, Europe’s biggest outdoor music event was given the green light once again for 2003. Last year Glastonbury Festivals signed a four-year contract with Eve Trakway, which will see the country’s most talked about perimeter fence return this year. The formidable super fence, which includes an extension to last year’s fence, stands at 4m high and over 7km long, comprises of overhangs to prevent climbing, an attached external roadway to prevent tunnelling and no nuts and bolts to prevent the fence from being dismantled.

The immense project involves a team of 16 people working on-site for 12 weeks amounting to over 14,000 man-hours in total to complete, involving transportation, installation and recovery. Due to the huge quantity of access products required for the event, the logistical operations have been on an extremely large scale with approximately 180 articulated lorry movements between the site and Eve Trakways’s central depot over the 12-week project period.

Festival Organiser, Michael Eavis, commented: “Following the success of Glastonbury 2002, Eve Trakway has once again provided an exemplary service. The introduction of the purpose built perimeter fence has immensely improved the security of the site over the last two years. Eve Trakway has done an excellent job providing an extremely valuable contribution towards the success of the festival”.

Eve Trakway’s Divisional Managing Director, Nigel McKinnell, commented: “Eve Trakway prides itself on its innovative approach to complex projects like Glastonbury. The Glastonbury Festival is our largest contract with our full range of access products being used so therefore requires in-depth planning and project management. All staff who have been involved in every stage of the project have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this year’s event”.
Eve Trakway has also erected 7km of mesh fencing to provide a second internal barrier around the site. In addition Eve Trakway has installed 5,954 Trakpanels (an equivalent to over 14km) to be used as the perimeter fence roadways and internal roadways throughout the site. Over 5km of SteelShield is being used throughout the site around the internal camping areas and to provide a security fence around a culvert to provide environmental protection to a local stream. Eve Trakway’s temporary flooring and turf protection product, Terraplas, is also being used with 2,100m2 being supplied as well as four pedestrian bridges and 580 metres of Pitstop Front of Stage Barriers, which are to be used around eight stages including the Radio One stage. The Workers Beer Company is using the new Pistop Aluminium Bar Barrier with 40 metres being installed.

Eve Trakway is involved in all the major festivals of 2003, including the V festivals, T in the Park, Reading, Leeds and Creamfields, providing a variety of temporary fencing, barriers, bridges and pedestrian walkways for outside events and also specialises in providing light, medium and heavy-duty temporary roadways for the construction, utilities and telecommunications industries.
